About USDA Recipes
USDA Recipes provides recipes and resources to support building healthy and budget-friendly meals. It is was developed through collaboration between the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP), the Child Nutrition Programs (CNP), and the Food Distribution Division (FDD).
The site offers household and large quantity recipes for program participants. Moreover, its features are designed to encourage key behaviors emphasized in the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans including the following:
- Detailed nutrition information to help consumers identify recipes that meet personal nutrition needs
- “Themed” searching related to food groups and nutrients. For example: “Eat more fruits and vegetables,” “Move to fat-free or low-fat dairy,” and “Reduce sodium”
- A variety of search filters, such as USDA Program, Course, Cooking Equipment, and Cuisine, to help users identify recipes of interest to them
- Cost ranges for individual recipes (as available)
- Cookbooks to browse and download or a tool to build your own
- A personal shopping list feature
- Consumer-friendly features such as star ratings, recipe reviews, and options to share content on social media
Nutritious recipes and menu planning serve as the building blocks for healthy meals and overall diet. Meal patterns that meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are achieved by considering the total food intake that includes a variety of healthy foods, over a period of time. While individual recipes may not meet all of the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, collectively they can contribute toward meeting the recommendations and improving lifelong eating habits.
About the Programs
Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) – CNPP’s mission is to improve the health of Americans by developing and promoting dietary guidance that links scientific research to the nutrition needs of consumers. CNPP carries out its mission to by (1) serving as the Federal authority on evidence-based food, nutrition and economic analyses to inform policy and programs; (2) translating science into actionable food and nutrition guidance for all Americans; and (3) leading national communication initiatives that apply science-based messages to advance consumers’ dietary and economic knowledge and behaviors. Child Nutrition Programs (CNP) – Child Nutrition Programs provide healthy food to children through the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Summer Food Service Program, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, and Special Milk Program. These programs help fight hunger and obesity by funding healthy meals for kids in the places where they spend “away-from-home time”— including schools, child care centers and homes, after-school programs, and summer recreational or enrichment programs. Food Distribution Division (FDD) – The Food Distribution Programs’ mission is to strengthen the Nation’s nutrition safety net by providing food and nutrition assistance to school children and families; and support American agriculture by distributing high quality, 100% American-grown USDA Foods.
