Resource Topic Category:Local School Wellness

Child Nutrition Program:
  • NSLP – National School Lunch Program

Maryland State Department of Education

Engaging families in student health and wellness is essential for encouraging healthy behaviors at home and at school. Students with families who are actively engaged with their school are more likely to have better attendance, healthy behaviors, and higher academic achievement. This Parent Workshop is one of three in a series released in 2019. The other two sessions focus on getting to know your local Wellness Policy and Physical Activity.
This workshop will provide information about the school nutrition environment including School Meals, other standards for foods sold and provided on school campus. Furthermore, it offers families resources to support children in healthy food decision making.
1. Explain the School Meal requirements and their alignment with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate recommendations.
2. Describe the school nutrition environment and Maryland’s Smart Snack requirements.
3. Identify resources to support families and children in healthy food decision making.
