Summary:

Note to ICN: All resources (surveys included) for Power Up With Produce should be categorized under NUTRITION EDUCATION

Audience: elementary students
Purpose: To inspire students to make healthy food choices using a live school assembly with local athletes and Power Panther. Messages from MyPlate and the 2015 Dietary Guidelines were aimed at increasing student familiarity, preferences, variety, frequency, and knowledge of fruits and vegetables, and additionally, decreasing neophobias.
Video content includes an emcee, Power Panther and athletes that children value to promote and model eating fruit and vegetables (FV). Five athletes introduce themselves and show a video clip of their sport. In the video, the athletes modeled healthy eating behaviors and disseminated program messages from the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The emcee and Power Panther led students at the assembly in blindfolded tasting games. After the show, students in the audience were able to taste a variety of fresh produce. For the next 6 months following the assembly, brief monthly Public Service Announcement videos reinforced program concepts (6 videos, 1 shown per month – 5 messages, 1 summary video) using the same athlete mentors. Each month, each teacher/ principal was sent the video link with reminders and either the teacher or principal verified the videos were shown.
