School staff in west Michigan are petitioning lawmakers to restore and expand a program called 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan’s Kids & Farms, because the program helps schools purchase locally grown produce, which would help schools accommodate for increased demand in meals for children due to the Covid 19 pandemic. A food service director claims normally 2,000 meals are served each week during summer, but it is anticipated that they will serve 22,000 meals for summer 2020. The 10 Cents a Meal program matches funds for schools, funds to be used for purchasing Michigan-grown produce. It would assist both the schools and smaller local producers.
