Celebrate National Farm to School Month in October – Institute of Child Nutrition
October is National Farm to School Month, a time to celebrate the connections that are happening all over the country between schools and local food!
Farm to school enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and preschools. Students gain access to healthy, local foods as well as education opportunities such as school gardens, cooking lessons and farm field trips.
Over the past decade, the farm to school movement has exploded across the United States, reaching millions of students in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Farm to school is an important tool in the fight against childhood obesity and food insecurity. In addition to improving child health, when schools buy local, they create new markets for local and regional farmers and contribute to vibrant communities, a win-win-win scenario!

OXFORD, MISS. – The National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI) will host a celebration and reception for their 25th anniversary in their building on The University of Mississippi (UM) campus Wednesday, Oct. 8 from 2-5 p.m.
“Exciting things are happening here as we continue to make progress and add to the great and successful history of the Institute,” said Elizabeth Halford, Marketing Specialist and Assistant to the Executive Director at NFSMI.
NFSMI was established by the United States Congress in 1989 and was brought to The University of Mississippi in 1991. The Institute’s mission is to provide information and services that promote the continuous improvement of child nutrition programs.
“Our national recognition and the awareness of our fabulous free resources have both increased a great deal during my time here. Our staff has grown in order to keep up with the increased demand,” Halford said.
During the event Katie Wilson, Executive Director of NFSMI, will welcome the guests and Chancellor Dan Jones of UM will address the group. Afterward, Dorothy Caldwell, past president of the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA), will give a brief presentation on the history of NFSMI.
